課程概述 |
本課程冀望兼具理想與實用性，除了輔助學生精進語言能力，亦激勵學生培養活潑的思考、論辯能力以及對於重要人文課題的敏銳度。這學期課程結構分三大部分。第一部份將教授寫作技巧，搭配兩篇短篇小說作為課堂討論題材。第二部分指導學生熟悉新聞英文，閱讀材料為時事文章。第三部份閱讀一本當代重要的生態題材書籍，並以其為靈感，舉行辯論。每週的聽力訓練以真實世界素材為主，輔助學生熟悉西方英語國家之文化、社會特色，並關心當前世界發展動態。課程要求包括三篇短篇作文。
上課重視互動、討論，並要求課前預習。學習態度與課堂參與程度十分重要。 |

課程目標 |
We are going to try several things this semester. In the first few weeks, we touch on useful writing principles and read two short stories to exercise our critical thinking abilities. In the second part of the semester, we look at important aspects of news media English and discuss topical issues covered by recent news articles. In the last part of the semester, we read an important book on ecology and hold a debate based on the questions raised by the book. Course requirements include three short pieces of writing. |

課程要求 |
1. Regular attendance. Two unexcused absences may be allowed throughout the semester without penalty. Unexcused absence from four classes will result in zero point on the “attendance, preparation, and class participation” part of your final grade, whereas unexcused absence from six classes will mean a failing grade.
2. Proper preparation. Preparation prior to the class meeting is required.
3. Active class participation. Participation in class discussion is essential.
4. Three compositions. You are to submit three pieces of writing throughout the semester, each of which will be corrected by the instructor. Length requirement for each is approximately 200-300 words. Detailed instructions on each assignment will be given in due course.
5. Midterm exam (vocabulary and paraphrasing on the news articles read in weeks 7-11).
6. Participation in class debate. In the last week of the semester, the class is to be divided into two groups and have a debate on questions raised by Alan Weisman’s book, The World without Us.
